Wilson’s Tales of the Borders were a 19th-century publishing
sensation. Rarely out of print for over 100 years, they were
begun by John McKay Wilson when he was Editor of the
Berwick Advertiser. His exciting and highly readable Tales,
drawing on local history, legend and Border Ballads, were
soon outselling Walter Scott. Further volumes continued to
be published after his death, with many different authors
contributing to the eventual total of 485 published Tales.
The Wilson’s Tales Revival Edition is a continuing project to
rekindle interest in the Tales by retelling and illustrating them
in modern styles, with background research on the events
behind them. This volume includes three brand-new stories
and six of the original Tales retold with their backstories:

Sir Patrick Hume: a true Tale of rebellion and survival in
Scotland’s Killing Times.

Judith the Egyptian: a haunting Tale of love, rivalry, revenge
and madness.

Kate Kennedy: an improbable Tale with a feisty woman, fine
wine and a phoney Frenchman.

The Trials of the Rev Samuel Austin: a harrowing – and true –
Tale of persecution in the Killing Times.

The Domestic Griefs of Gustavus M’Iver: a comic Tale of a
brawny bruiser bested by his boozy bride.

Thomas of Chartres: a Tale of 13th-century intrigue transported
to the 21st century.
